| Ford Motor Company |
| General Motors The oldest of
the GM motor companies is Oldsmobile. The original
company was started in 1897 by Ransom E. Olds.
On July 22, 1908 the Fisher Body Company is incorporated by Albert,
Fred and Charles Fisher and is located in Detroit.
January 20, 1909 General Motors purchases a 1/2 interest in
Oakland Motor Car Co.
July 29, 1909 General Motors purchases Cadillac for $5.5
million. Henry M. Leland and his son, Wilfred, are
invited to continue operating Cadillac. They do so until
1917, when they leave to form Lincoln Motor Co.
AC Spark Plug joins GM. Known as Champion Ignition Company in 1909,
the name is changed to AC Spark Plug Company in 1922 and
made a division in 1933.
In May 1916, Durant creates United Motors Corp., a
combination of five parts and accessories manufacturers
that include Hyatt Roller Bearing, led by Alfred P.
Sloan, and Dayton Engineering Laboratories, led by
Charles F. Kettering. Sloan is named president of United
Motors.
Durant announces that Chevrolet owns 54.5 percent of GM's
outstanding shares and takes over the GM presidency from
Charles W. Nash, who had been GM president from 1912 to
1916.
General Motors Corporation is incorporated under
Delaware law (Oct. 13) and acquires all stock of General
Motors Company.
Durant purchases an interest in the Samson Sieve-Grip Tractor
Co. of Stockton, California. The following year he
recommends that GM enter the farm equipment business and
directors approve purchase of Durant's interest as well
as acquisition of the rest of the company. In 1922,
Samson Tractor, by now a division of General Motors, is
liquidated because it is unprofitable.
General Motors buys the operating assets of Chevrolet Motor Company
in May.
United Motors Corporation (UMC) becomes part of General Motors
Corporation. UMC is dissolved in 1919 and individual
businesses continue as part of General Motors. United
Motors Service, Inc., created by Sloan in 1916 to handle
sales for the UMC manufacturing divisions, is included
in this acquisition and becomes a division of General
Motors in 1944. In 1971 United Motors Service Division
is renamed United Delco Division and in 1974 it is
absorbed into AC-Delco Division.
Durant invests personally in Guardian Frigerator, a company trying
to manufacture a new product, an electric ice box.
General Motors acquires 60% interest in Fisher Body Company.
General Motors purchases Dayton Wright Company, an early airplane
manufacturer. In 1929, its assets are sold to Fokker
Aircraft Corporation.
Chevrolet
Louis Chevrolet incorporates the
Chevrolet Motor Company of Michigan in November of 1911,
with William Little and Edwin Cambell. They headquarter
in Detroit.
Durant announces that Chevrolet owns 54.5 percent of GM's

Buick
May 19, 1903 sees the founding of Buick
Motor Company, by David Dunbar Buick. On September
11, 1903 Buick started building the first Buick engine
plan with funding from Flint Wagon Works, and operations
are moved from Detroit to Flint.
Cadillac
In 1902 Cadillac Automobile Company is
organized in Detroit by Henry M. Leland, a precision
manufacturer of automotive components.
In 1910 Cadillac becomes the first American manufacturer to offer
closed bodies as standard equipment, revolutionizing
motoring convenience by providing cleanliness and
all-weather comfort.
Pontiac
The Oakland Motor Car Co.,
predecessor to Pontiac Motor, is founded by Edward M.
Murphy on August 28, 1907 in Pontiac, Michigan.
Oldsmobile
Olds Motor Vehicle Company, Inc. was
started by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In 1999 Olds
Motor Vehicle and Olds Gasoline Engine Works of Lancing
merge and form Olds Motor Works. The first factory
specifically for automobile manufacture in the United
States is built by Olds in Detroit on Jefferson Avenue
East.
GMC
General Motors acquires the Rapid
Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan, the
predecessor of GMC Truck, and Reliance Motor Truck Co.
of Owosso, Michigan. A Rapid becomes the first truck to
conquer Pikes Peak in 1909.
General Motors Truck Company (later known as GMC) is organized on
July 22, 1911, to handle sales of GM's Rapid and
Reliance products. |
| Chrysler Corp. (DaimlerChrysler)
In 1923 Walter Percy Chrysler, already owner of the
automobile firms “Chalmers” and “Maxwell”, registered
his own automobile factory. He began to produce Chrysler
series cars in 1925. Soon “Maxwell” and “Chalmers”
ceased to exist, and were replaced by “Dodge” and
“Plymouth”, which marked the birth of “Chrysler”.
Chrysler is the third largest automobile producing
company in the United States, also exported under the
brand names “Dodge” and “Plymouth”. In 1998, the company
merged with DaimlerBenz, forming DaimlerChrysler, with a
production plan of nearly 4 million cars per year.
January 1999 saw the production of new models of the
joint program. The creation of the international firm
Daimler Chrysler saw a growth in popularity of the
Chrysler brand, which is planning to expand its
production program by producing more compact models, is
taking a bold step onto the world market. The Chrysler
logo has changed several times, becoming more and more
complex, but in the end has reverted to its original
logo in the form of a seal.
